Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Chicago Cubs today announced that, due to rising demand, tickets are now available for the upper deck box and upper deck reserved seating sections for the historic Peoria Chiefs July 29 contest at Wrigley Field.
These upper deck tickets for the "Road to Wrigley," presented by National City, are available for only $5 or $10 on www.cubs.com and through a link on the Chiefs website at www.peoriachiefs.com. Previously, the upper deck was off limits, and tickets were only being sold in the lower bowl and bleachers. However, advanced ticket sales for the Peoria Chiefs vs. Kane County Cougars game have already shattered the Midwest League's single game attendance record. The record stands at 14,492 and was set in a game between the same two teams at Kane County on August 11, 2007.
The 7:05 pm game on Tuesday, July 29 features the return of Cubs legend and baseball Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg to Wrigley Field. The current Chiefs manager will lead his team onto the field and manage for the first time at the stadium where his number 23 is retired. The official Midwest League game, which counts as a Chiefs home game, is believed to be the first minor league contest in the ballpark's 94-year history.
As a Chiefs home game, the contest will feature the traditional between-inning contests and wacky antics that fans are used to seeing at O'Brien Field over the last six seasons. The Chiefs promotional team and mascot Homer will toss t-shirts into the crowd, conduct creative contests involving the fans, and keep the fans fired up throughout the ballgame. World renowned ballpark entertainers Birdzerk and Zooperstars! will also perform throughout the contest. After the game, all kids 14 and under will be invited onto the field to run the Wrigley Field bases.
The Chiefs and Cougars have met seven times this season with Peoria leading the season series 4-3. Only one of the seven games has been decided before the final innings. Kane County won three games in Peoria in early April, including a 17-inning thriller on April 13 that was only scheduled for seven innings. The Chiefs returned the favor last weekend with a four-game sweep at O'Brien Field. Peoria won three of the games in their final at-bat and two in 11-innings. The final game on Monday was decided on a walk-off grand slam by Jovan Rosa in the 11th. The two rivals will meet three more times before the Wrigley game as Peoria heads to Kane County July 9-11.
Tickets for the "Road to Wrigley" start at $5 and are currently available on www.cubs.com. For more information, please visit www.cubs.com or call 1-800-THE-CUBS.
Two other Midwest League teams have hosted games at the fields of their Major League affiliates. The Beloit Snappers hosted the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Milwaukee's Miller Park on August 14, 2003 in front of 14,147 fans. They played at Miller Park again the next year on August 12 with an audience of 5,127 fans. On August 22, 2005, the West Michigan Whitecaps hosted the Fort Wayne Wizards at Detroit's Comerica Park, drawing in 3,884 fans.
Three former Chiefs have played at Wrigley in a Cubs uniform since Peoria again became a Cubs affiliate in 2005. Eric Patterson, Sean Gallagher, and Sam Fuld were Chiefs for the 2005 season, and all three played for the Cubs in 2007. Gallagher and Patterson are currently with Chicago while Fuld is in Double-A Tennessee.
The series will conclude with two games on July 30th and 31st at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs will be making the trip up to Chicago after a six-game road trip to Fort Wayne and Dayton. Kane County will be traveling in from a three-game series in Dayton.
