'Caps earn doubleheader sweep

COMSTOCK PARK - Joe Tucker scored the winning run in the bottom of the twelfth inning on a wild pitch by Robert Woodard as the Whitecaps completed a double header sweep of Fort Wayne with a 4-3 victory. Tucker led off the 12th with a single, moved to second on a bunt single by Jordan Newton and went to third on a sacrifice by Alex Avila. In game one, Tucker had the walkoff RBI single in the bottom of the seventh of the ‘Caps 1-0 triumph over the Wizards. Thad Weber started the game for the Whitecaps and retired the first 13 Fort Wayne batters of the game. Overall, West Michigan pitchers set down 23 consecutive Wizards beginning in the fourth inning of game one. The first Wizard to reach base in game two was Andy Parrino. He doubled on a routine fly to left that was lost in the twilight by outfielder Hayden Parrott. At the time, the Whitecaps led 1-0 thanks to a home run by Audy Ciriaco in the fourth. Parrino scored on a single by Yefri Carvajal that tied the game, 1-1. In the bottom of the fifth, West Michigan took a 3-1 lead on a two run homer by Cory Middleton. The lead held until the top of the seventh and final scheduled inning when reliever Rudy Darrow allowed a two-run home run to Parrino, which tied the score and set the stage for extra innings. Woodard pitched four perfect innings of relief beginning in the eighth prior to Tucker's hit that led off the 12th. Darrow threw three innings of relief for the Whitecaps as did Noah Krol. It was the longest outing of Krol's professional career. Kelvin Cedano pitched the top of the 12th to pick up the victory and improve to 2-1. The game was completed at 11:53 p.m., nearly six hours after the start of game one
