Dayton, Ohio-Evan Frey and Mike Mee each collected two hits and drove in three runs as the South Bend Silver Hawks defeated the Dayton Dragons 10-3 on Thursday night. The Dragons fell to 26-32 on the season with the loss.
South Bend got the scoring started with five runs in the top of the second inning against Dragons starting pitcher Luis Montano. Frey's three-run triple highlighted the inning.
The Dragons answered with three runs on five consecutive hits to start the bottom of the second inning. Denis Phipps started the rally with a double off the left field fence and Michael McKennon followed with a double to the left-center field gap to bring in Phipps. Kevyn Feiner lined a single to right to bring in McKennon and make it 5-2. Keltavious Jones then lined a single to right, but Feiner slipped after he rounded second base and was tagged out as he attempted to get back to the bag. Justin Reed followed with a double to left to bring in Jones from first base and make it 5-3.
But South Bend's Chance Wheeless drilled a solo home run in the fifth off Montano to again give the Silver Hawks a three-run lead at 6-3. They added another run in the sixth off reliever Steven Otterness to make it 7-3 and then scored three times in the eighth off Juan Rafael to close out the scoring.
The Dragons had only one base runner after the second inning. Devin Mesoraco singled to start the sixth but was erased on a double play. South Bend pitchers faced the minimum 21 batters over the final seven innings of the game.
Montano (6-4) lasted five innings, allowing six hits and six runs with one walk and two strikeouts and suffered the loss.
Dragons pitchers walked 11 batters in the game including 10 in four innings by the bullpen.
The Dragons host South Bend again on Friday at 7:05 p.m. (Time Warner Digital Cable Channel 99 and WING 1410 AM). Josh Ravin (1-2, 5.14) will start for Dayton.
