Kernels make quick work of Bees, 1-0

June 5, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels defeated the Burlington Bees by the score of 1-0 on Thursday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium in a game that was played in just an hour and fifty-two minutes. The win is the second in a row for the Kernels and the fifth game in a row decided by just one run.
The Kernels scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Jay Brossman, his fourth of the season. Brossman was 2 for 4 on the night and added a double to his home run.
Kernels starter Michael Anton (7-3) came within one out of a complete game, but was replaced with runners in scoring position and two outs in the ninth. Ryan Brasier gave up an infield single but got Jamar Walton to ground out to short to end the game and earn his ninth save. Anton threw 101 pitches with 79 strikes and induced twelve groundouts.
Cedar Rapids pounded out 10 hits as Andrew Romine and Tyler Johnson each had two hits. Jeremy Moore, Clay Fuller, Efren Navarro and Chris Rosenbaum all had a single.
Burlington starter Eduardo Paulino (2-3) gave up eight hits and struck out three over six innings with his only mistake the home run to Brossman. Zach Evangelho was 2 for 2 to lead the Bees.
Game two of this four game series is Friday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest is in the stadium parking lot from 4 to 7 pm and is free. The wild and crazy Zooperstars, presented by KCRG TV9 and The Gazette, will be on hand to entertain fans of all ages during the game with their crazy antics and wild skits. It's also a 94.1 KRNA Progressive Beer Night: draft beer starts at $1 when the gates open at 6 pm and goes up a buck every hour, until it reaches full price.
