Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI - Gavin Dickey picked a great time for his first home run of the 2008 season. The Rattler left fielder, who tied the game with a double in the eighth inning, launched a game-winning homer in the bottom of the tenth inning. The walk-off homer gave Wisconsin their fourth win in a row.
Quad Cities (30-28) started off the game with a pair of runs in the first inning. Francisco Rivera drove in both runs with a single to left.
Wisconsin (26-30) answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the second. Ron Garth doubled and went to third on an error by centerfielder Tommy Pham. An RBI grounder by Calvin Beamon drove in Garth.
The Rattlers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Juan Diaz delivered a two-out RBI single to center and Scott Robinson scored from second to make the score 2-2.
But, a hit batsman and a throwing error by Rattler pitcher Juan Ramirez allowed the Bandits to retake the lead in the top of the sixth. Ramirez hit Rivera with two outs and nobody on base. Nick Peoples tapped a little grounder halfway between home plate and the mound. Ramirez picked up the ball cleanly, but fired wide of first base. Rivera scored all the way from first to put Quad Cities back in front.
Wisconsin rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning. Beamon reached first on an infield single, his third hit of the game. Dickey was next and he fouled off six two strike pitches to work the count full. He popped up the twelfth pitch of the at bat in foul territory, but catcher Luis De La Cruz dropped the ball to give Dickey another chance.
Dickey lined the thirteenth pitch of the at bat into the left field corner. Beamon, who was running on the pitch, raced home without a play to tie the game 3-3.
Dickey wasn't done. He lined a 2-0 pitch from Wayne Daman for a lead-off, game-winning home run in the bottom of the tenth inning.
Jake Wild was the winning pitcher as he pitched a 1-2-3 top of the tenth.
The home run by Dickey was the first by a Rattler since Maximo Mendez hit a lead-off homer on Memorial Day at Peoria. The blast was the first to leave Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium since Scott Robinson hit a game-ending homer against Kane County in a 4-2 win on May 17.
Game two of the series is Friday night. Edward Paredes (4-5, 3.48) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Mark Diapoules (4-0, 1.83) is set to start for the River Bandits. Game time is 7:05pm.
