Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars used several different comebacks Thursday against the Beloit Snappers but never could get all the way back to tie it or take the lead, falling 8-6 in the opener of a four-game series in front of 5,529 at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars had the winning run on base when the game ended, but the loss decreased their lead over Beloit in the standings to 3.5 games for the wild card playoff spot in the Western Divisino.

Cougars starter Jamie Richmond (5-4) had beaten the Snappers in April in his season debut but struggled this time, tying his season-high with six runs -- five earned -- allowed on six hits. He allowed three runs in the first inning before Justin Frash hit his first professional home run in the second, a solo shot that made it 3-1. After two more Beloit runs in the third, Larry Cobb crushed a two-run blast in the fourth for a 5-3 score. Each team managed a run in the fifth, with the Cougars scoring on a Matt Ray sacrifice fly.

The Snappers took an 8-4 lead in the seventh with two runs -- one earned -- against reliever Brent Lysander, but Brad Hertzler kept them at bay the rest of the way and the Cougars battled back in the ninth. They loaded the bases on two walks and an error, and Adam Klein delivered an RBI single and Greg Dowling got hit by a pitch to make it 8-6. But then Spencer Steedley struck out Cobb to notch his sixth save and ensure the victory for starter Michael McCardell (2-1).

The Cougars (35-24) and Snappers (32-28) continue their four-game series Friday night at 6:30 CT when Scott Deal (3-1, 2.29) faces Brian Kirwan (3-3, 5.13).
