Dragons continue dominance of Devil Rays

Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (24-22, 59-57) really enjoy when the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (21-26, 53-63) come to town. Dayton used strong pitching and fundamental hitting to down the Devil Rays for the eighth straight time at Fifth Third Field with a 4-0 victory in front of 8,475 fans. With the victory, Dragons starter Carlos Fisher (WP, 10-5) becomes the first Dayton pitcher to reach double digits in wins since Eddy Valdez had 11 and Juan Frias had 10 in 2003.

Fisher stole the show from the beginning as he struck out the first batter he faced and never looked back. The Dragons right-hander tossed 7.0 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits, while striking out five and walking none.

The only real threat against Fisher came in the top of the 3rd when Jason St. Clair singled with one out, then reached third on Neil Walton's double. Jackson Brennan followed with a groundball to first baseman Bobby Mosby, who threw home to retire St. Clair at the plate for the second out. When Brennan tried to steal second, a rundown ensued, and Walton broke from third in an attempt to score. It turned out to be bad base-running as Dragons shortstop Adam Rosales charged after Walton, finally throwing to third baseman Eric Eymann who applied the tag for the third out of the inning.

Devil Rays starter Matt Walker (LP, 4-4) appeared to be rattled by his team's poor base-running when he took the mound for the bottom of third. Walker immediately issued a bases on balls to Mike DeJesus, and threw a wild pitch to advance him to second. Mike Griffin followed with a double to left-center, scoring DeJesus, and giving the Dragons a 1-0 lead. After Jay Bruce's groundout got Griffin to third, another wild pitch gave the Dragons the 2-0 edge.

Dayton added two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh off of reliever Aaron Walker (ND). Eymann doubled to start the inning, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from Gerardo Cabrera. Against a drawn-in infield, DeJesus singled to center to put the Dragons up 3-0. Griffin laid down a bunt single, and one out later Rosales connected for an RBI single, and the Dragons held the lead at 4-0.

That would be all the runs Dayton would need as Fisher, Jose Rojas (ND), and Bo Lanier (SV, 9) kept the Devil Rays off the scoreboard for the 10th Dragons shutout of 2006. Rojas tossed 1.2 scoreless frames, while Lanier got the final out with two runners aboard in the ninth to earn the save.

Dayton will try to stretch the winning streak over the Devil Rays to nine on Friday evening at Fifth Third Field. Dayton will have RHP Daniel Guerrero (3-3, 4.73 ERA) on the mound while Southwest Michigan will throw LHP Jake McGee (7-8, 2.63 ERA). Friday's and Saturday's games will be televised live on Time Warner Television Channel 25 beginning at 7 PM with guest announcer and Reds Hall-of-Famer Tom Browning. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 6:30 PM, and first pitch at 7:00 PM.
