Chiefs win wild one over Bees 12-9

Peoria, IL - After squandering a first inning six-run lead, the Peoria Chiefs rallied late to overcome a three-run deficit to defeat the Burlington Bees Thursday night at O'Brien Field. The Chiefs scored six in the first and book-ended their offensive night with six more in the eighth as they made it 11 victories in 13 games against the Bees this season.

Trailing 9-6, Peoria scored six in the eighth to jump in front. With one out, Blake Lalli and Davy Gregg both singled. Ryne Malone walked and Jesus Valdez singled home two. Ryan Norwood tied it with an RBI fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, two away and a full count on Yusuf Carter, the Chiefs outfielder came through. He connected on a sharp groundball single to right to score two and put the Chiefs up 11-9. Alberto Garcia added an insurance run with his second RBI single of the night to make it a 12-9 Chiefs lead. Once leading 6-0, Chiefs pitching allowed nine unanswered runs, seven of those coming in the fourth. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Jose Duarte and Josh Johnson recorded back-to-back RBI singles to plate two. After Jesse Estrada came on in relief of starter Jesus Yepez, Valentino Arce came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Vega. With the score now 6-5, the Bees tied it on a passed ball and went ahead on an RBI double by Jeff Howell.

Burlington added two more that inning on a two-run single by former Chief Omar Pena to make it a 9-6 Bees lead.

The Chiefs touched up Burlington starter Carlos Rosa right off the bat. Gregg ripped a single to center, and Malone smoked his second homer of the season on a towering fly ball to right. Peoria tripled that total in the same inning. After a Robinson Chirinos walked, Kyle Reynolds pulled a two-run homer over the wall in right. Garcia later added a RBI single to score Carter, and Blake Lalli hit an opposite field RBI double to give the Chiefs an early 6-0 lead.

The Bees got on the board in the second. Jeremy Jirschele knocked an RBI double to right-center to score Howell. Burlington tallied another single run in the third on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Howell to make it a 6-2 ballgame.

Yepez lasted just three-plus innings and allowed seven runs, six earned on six hits Estrada allowed two runs in his inning of work, and Roger Evenson shined, firing four shutout innings out of the bullpen in picking up his first victory of the season. Matt Avery came on in the ninth to earn his 15th save of the season. After giving up six runs in the first, Rosa settled in and tossed four consecutive scoreless innings.

Ryne Malone (2B) - Malone was 2-4 including his second round tripper of the year, a two-run bomb in the first. He also doubled and walked.

Notes... With a RBI double in the second, Jirschele ended a 0-27 slump against Chiefs pitching this season... Thursday night was Blake Lalli's first professional three-hit game. Davy Gregg also had a three-hit game, his second of month...Attendance Thursday night was 2,980... RHP Joel Santo (1-2, 5.02) will be on the mound for the Chiefs going up against RHP Matt Kniginyzky (8-4, 3.36)...First pitch is slated for 7:00 PM and the pre-game show will kick-off at 6:45 on www.peoriachiefs.com
