Lansing Lugnuts News Release
South Bend, Ind. - Casey McKenzie stifled batters all night as the Lansing Lugnuts rode his arm to a 3-0 victory over the South Bend SilverHawks at Coveleski Stadium Thursday evening. It is the tenth time this season that Lansing has blanked an opponent.
McKenzie (1-4) twirled seven innings of two-hit baseball, fanning four batters in the process of picking up his first victory of the season. He retired the final 13 men that he faced and faced just two batters over the minimum.
Po-Hsuan Keng entered the game in the eighth and allowed one hit in a two inning save, his third of the season. The pitchers combined to allow just two runners to reach second base.
The Lugnuts took the lead in the second inning on a two out rally. Zack Kalter singled and moved to second on a fielding error by Justin Upton. Jesus Gonzalez then doubled into left field to plate Kalter and give Lansing a 1-0 lead. Anthony Garibaldi's triple into right-center scored Gonzalez to extend the lead to 2-0.
Lansing added the final run in the third frame when Luke Hetherington scored on a double play ball to make it 3-0.
Lansing (60-54, 20-27) and South Bend (61-51, 28-18) will play the second game of the series on Friday night. Adrian Martin (6-1, 4.98) will take the hill for the Lugnuts, while Vincent Bongiovanni (4-2, 4.06) will hurl for the SilverHawks. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
