WINSTON-SALEM, NC (MAY 5, 2011) - Lynchburg plated two late runs in Thursday night's series opener at BB&T Ballpark and Winston-Salem was unable to answer, falling 3-1. The Dash lost despite the second straight seven-inning performance from starter Terry Doyle.

The Dash (9-18) struck first in the fourth inning after the first three batters reached against Dimasther Delgado. Jose Martinez led off with a single, and then scored on Jared Mitchell's double that hit halfway up the right-center field wall. Ian Gac followed with a walk, and then Nick Ciolli sacrificed the runners to second and third with one out. But the Dash only plated the one run in the frame, stranding the runners in scoring position.

After that point, Lynchburg (10-15) pitching set down 18 consecutive Dash batters through the end of the ballgame. Delgado and reliever Andrew Wilson teamed to thwart Winston's offense.

Lynchburg tied up the score in the fifth. Adam Milligan started the inning with a double and moved over to third after Joey Terdoslavich singled. Joe Leonard then grounded into a 5-4-3 double play that registered two outs, but also scored the tying run. The twin killing was the third of four double play groundouts in the game for the Hillcats.

The Dash flashed the leather to retire the first two batters in the seventh inning. Terdoslavich grounded a ball down the first base line, and Gac made a diving stop and threw to first for out number one. Joe Leonard then hit a sinking line drive that Mitchell dove and caught in centerfield. With two outs, though, L.V. Ware and Braeden Schlehuber hit two straight doubles to center field that scored the second Hillcats run.

In the eighth, Todd Cunningham led off with a single for Lynchburg, and moved over to second on a groundout by Andrelton Simmons. Phil Gosselin then lined a ball that glanced off the glove of shortstop Kyle Shelton, putting Cats at the corners with one out. Milligan hit a sacrifice fly to left to make the score 3-1 Lynchburg. Winston-Salem was unable to mount a rally late in the game.

Though he pitched well in seven innings, Doyle (0-4) got the loss in the series opener. He gave up two runs, both earned, and struck out one. Delgado (2-3) earned the win after striking out six in six innings, and Wilson picked up his second save of the season.

The Dash and Cats continue their four-game series tomorrow night at 7 p.m. RHP Andre Rienzo (0-0, 2.36) starts for Winston-Salem against RHP Zeke Spruill (1-2, 2.25). Fans can catch all the action beginning at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
