Gloats ¬ËN Hoes: The Keys took bragging rights by winning the rubber game of their series with the Dash on Wednesday 9-3 at Harry Grove Stadium. Frederick was powered by a Miguel Abreu grand slam and a 5 for 5 day at the plate by L.J. Hoes. It was a career-high in hits for Hoes, who raised his batting average 41 points to .263 with his tremendous day at the plate. After the Dash took a 2-0 lead, Abreu hit the grand slam in the third inning to give Frederick the lead. The Keys added one more in that frame and four more runs in the fourth to run away from Winston-Salem and win the three-game series. The Dash enter tonight's home stand opener against Lynchburg having lost 14 of their last 17 games.
Road Trip Recap: The Dash finished their six-game road trip with a 1-5 record against Wilmington and Frederick. Winston-Salem struggled with the bats during the trip north, hitting .180 and scoring 16 runs (eight in the one win, eight total runs in the five losses). The team posted an ERA of 4.41 over the course of the six games away from BB&T Ballpark.
Same Green & Gold, Different Hill City Kitties: Tonight the Dash welcome the new-look Lynchburg Hillcats to town for a four-game series. This marks the first meeting between the teams in 2011 and the first time Winston-Salem has played Lynchburg since it became affiliated with the Atlanta Braves. For the previous 12 seasons, the Braves' Carolina League affiliate was Myrtle Beach, but with the Rangers moving in this season Atlanta had to look elsewhere to house their Advanced-A team. Last year against the Braves-laden Pelicans had the worst record in the Carolina League (58-82) but won nine of 20 games against the Dash, who had the best record in the league (81-58). Winston-Salem is sad to see the Cincinnati Reds leave the Carolina League. With their affiliate in Lynchburg last year, the Dash won 16 of their 20 matchups including the first nine of the season.
False Start: Joe Serafin's outing yesterday (3 IP, 5 R) ended a string of excellent starts by Dash starting pitchers. Over the previous four games, the team's starters posted a combined ERA of just 1.44 (4 ER, 25 IP) and an opposing batting average of .216 (19 for 88).
Oester Boy: Jake Oester paced the Winston-Salem offense yesterday, going 3 for 4 with an RBI double and a run scored. Since getting a promotion from low-A Kannapolis on April 21, Oester is batting .433 (13 for 30) with three doubles, four RBI, and three runs scored. Going back to his final two games with the Intimidators, Oester has a ten-game hit streak and is batting .405 (15 for 37). Prior to this hit streak, he had been 0 for 13 on the season.
Bottom-Heavy: The top of the Dash lineup had an uncharacteristically poor day yesterday, as the top five in the order went a combined 0 for 19 with four walks. The bottom four, conversely, went 5 for 13 with three walks.
Keep your friends close and your enemies closer: The Dash have played mostly close games this season. Twenty-one of the team's 26 games have been decided by three runs or fewer and the team has had a lead in 20 games this season. Winston has played 11 one-run games and seven two-run games. The Dash are 4-7 in one-run games and 3-4 in two run contests. At this rate, the Dash would play 97 one - or two-run games over the course of the season.
Today's Opposing Starter: RHP Arodys Vizcaino (1-2, 3.93) makes his fifth start of the season and his first against the Dash. Vizcaino is coming off a back injury that forced him to leave his last start early and he is expected to only pitch one inning in tonight's contest before Dimasther Delgado (1-3, 4.82) will come into the game. Vizcaino entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the seventh-best prospect in the Atlanta Braves system after a 2010 season that saw him go 9-4 with a 2.39 ERA in low-A Rome (14 starts) and 0-0 with a 4.61 ERA (three starts) in Myrtle Beach. He was acquired from the Yankees in December of 2009 in a trade that sent Vizcaino, Melky Cabrera, and Mike Dunn to Atlanta in exchange for Javier Vazquez and former Winston-Salem Warthog Boone Logan. The Dominican throws his fastball 92-94 mph and was clocked in spring training this season at 101 in a game against the Cardinals. Baseball America states that his best pitch is a "hammer" curveball and he also has a good changeup. Vizcaino's biggest question mark is his ability to stay healthy. He was shut down with a right elbow injury for two months last year with a partially torn elbow ligament that did not require surgery. The 20-year-old was originally signed by the Yankees for $800,000 in 2007 and was viewed as one of the best international prospects available that year.
