MOOSIC, P.A. - An offensive surge led the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (55-50) to a series-opening victory over Worcester Red Sox (54-52) on Tuesday night, a 10-2 final score at PNC Field.
The WooSox rallied early, loading the bases four batters into the game on a pair of walks and a catcher's interference. Pedro Castellanos drove home Abraham Almonte after a throwing error, and after a popout, Jeter Downs made it 2-0 Worcester with an RBI single to left.
Downs' swing gave him is 33rd RBI of the year and his first in any game since July 10 (sac-fly with Boston vs. NYY).
SWB dominated from that point on, scoring in the third, fifth and seventh on the way to the win.
Working against WooSox starter Victor Santos, making his Triple-A debut, the RailRiders got on the board a Chris Owings solo homer in the third. Two batters later, Tyler Wade cracked a two-run homer, giving the RailRiders the lead, which they would hold for the rest of the night.
In the fourth, Santos allowed RBI doubles to Michael Beltre and Owings, followed by a run-scoring single from Estevan Florial. After a walk, Worcester went to the bullpen for Geoff Hartlieb, who gave up an Oswaldo Cabrera two-run single before getting the final out of the inning.
Hartlieb would toss a scoreless fifth inning, and Caleb Simpson followed with a runless sixth.
The held the 8-2 SWB scoreline until the seventh, when Phillip Evans and Beltre knocked back-to-back solo home runs off Durbin Feltman.
Zack Kelly did not allow a run in the ninth for Worcester, lowering his season ERA to 3.14 over 39 appearances.
Offensively, the WooSox managed a season-low three hits. Ronaldo Hernandez reached base three times, tying a career-high with two walks in the ballgame.
The WooSox continue the six-game road series against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m., affiliate of the New York Yankees. Radio coverage is live at 6:15 p.m. on 100.1 FM The Pike, 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
