Louisville Bats News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs used a four run third inning to defeat the Louisville Bats 4-2 Tuesday night at Principal Park.
The game was scoreless until that bottom of the third, when Iowa was able to get to Bats' starter Levi Stoudt. After a double and a single to start the frame, Darius Hill laced a two-run double into the right field corner to put the Cubs ahead. Later in the inning, Alfonso Rivas and Narciso Crook each added RBI doubles to extend the Iowa advantage to 4-0.
Stoudt ended up allowing just those four runs over five innings in his Louisville debut and second start in the Reds' organization. Stoudt was part of the package Cincinnati acquired from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Luis Castillo at last week's trade deadline.
Cubs' starter Matt Swarmer gave his team four excellent innings, striking out six while holding the Bats off the scoreboard. Louisville did plate a run top of the fifth inning against Blake Whitney when Miguel Hernandez grounded out to shortstop, allowing Ronnie Dawson to come home.
The Bats added a run in the top of the ninth inning on Ronnie Dawson's RBI single, but that would be all for the night in the 4-2 loss.
The Bats and Cubs will play game two of their six-game series Wednesday night at Principal Park. Randy Wynne (4-10, 4.86 ERA) will start for Louisville. Iowa has not yet announced a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:38 p.m. ET.
