Kane County Cougars News Release

BELOIT, Wisc. - The Kane County Cougars started their 18th season on a winning note, as they doubled up the Beloit Snappers, 10-5, Friday night at Pohlman Field. Greg Dowling led the way with four RBIs, as the Cougars' offense drove in all of its runs with two outs, and their pitchers totaled 16 strikeouts.

Todd Johnson started the scoring with a three-run homer in the second off Beloit starter David Bromberg (0-1). After Cougars starter Craig Italiano let the Snappers tie it in the fourth, his offense came to life in the fifth, as Dowling smoked a two-run double to the wall in right to make it, 5-3.

Then the Cougars broke the game open with four unearned tallies in the sixth against reliever Steven Hirschfeld. Walter Correa doubled in Christian Vitters and scored on wild pitch, setting up another two-run connection by Dowling, making it 9-3. The Snappers scored two unearned runs in the bottom half against Justin Friend for a 9-5 count, but the Cougars offset that with run in the seventh for what turned out to be the final.

Friend (1-0) recorded the win over Bromberg, part of a trio of Cougars relievers that fanned 11. The Cougars (1-0) and Snappers (0-1) are scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon that begins at 2 CT. Travis Banwart and Brad Hertzler will be the starting pitchers for Kane County.
