Peoria Chiefs News Release
Despite a late charge, the Peoria Rivermen were unable to overcome a three-goal deficit after two periods of play and dropped a 5-3 decision to the Iowa Stars Friday night in Des Moines.
Tom Wandell scored just 12 seconds into the game to get the ball rolling for Iowa, driving down the right wing past the Peoria defense and cutting in front of Marek Schwarz, wrapping the puck past his outstretched right pad for a 1-0 lead.
James Neal would double the lead at 18:41 when he took the rebound of a Trevor Ludwig point shot that missed the net and fired it home off the back boards past a sliding Schwarz.
Perttu Lindgren recorded the only goal of the second period at 7:54, with Chris Connor taking the puck down the right side to generate the chance. After Connor's initial shot attempt was rebuffed, he fed the puck to a wide-open Lindgren for his ninth of the year and a 3-0 Stars edge.
The Rivermen would get on the board with a pair of six-on-four power play goals, with the first coming from Marty Kariya at 8:11. Jean-Guy Trudel and Charles Linglet set up the marker to get Peoria on the board.
After Trevor Byrne put the Stars up 4-1 just under a minute later, again Peoria would capitalize on a power play with the extra attacker. This time Julian Talbot redirected a point shot from Trudel at 10:48 to make it a 4-2 game.
Charles Linglet then tipped home Ryan Glenn's shot at 15:40 to draw the Rivermen within a goal, beating Tobias Stefan (27 saves) on the stick side for a 4-3 score.
Neal would kill the hopes for a Rivermen comeback when he found the empty net at 18:45 for a 5-3 final.
The Rivermen will now return home to take on the Chicago Wolves at 7 pm with Corbin Bleu from Disney's High School Musical appearing live! Tickets are on sale now through the Peoria Civic Center Box Office, at all TicketMaster locations, on line at www.ticketmaster.com, or charge by phone at (309) 676-8700.
