Dayton Dragons News Release
Midland, Mich.- Four Great Lakes pitchers combined to scatter 10 hits and notch 14 strikeouts as the Loons defeated the Dayton Dragons 5-4 on Friday night. Great Lakes has won the first two games of the season-opening series with the Dragons.
Trailing 4-1 in the sixth inning, the Dragons rallied to tie the game when Todd Frazier lined a double to left-center and Brandon Waring followed with a two-run home run, the first of the year for the Dragons, to make it 4-3. Mike McKennon was hit by a pitch and Denis Phipps doubled to left to score McKennon from first to tie the game.
But Great Lakes scored in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead. With one out, Travis Vetters walked and stole second. Vetters then stole third and scored on the same play when the throw from catcher Jason Bour went into left field.
The Dragons' final opportunity came in the eighth inning when Waring singled with one out and went to third on a two-out infield hit by Phipps. But Great Lakes reliever Bobby Blevins struck out Bour to end the threat.
In the ninth inning, Great Lakes closer Miguel Ramirez worked a perfect frame to earn his second save in two nights.
Dragons reliever Terrell Young was charged with the loss, allowing an unearned run in two innings of work. He gave up one hit and one walk while striking out two.
Dragons starter Jamie Arneson suffered through one bad inning over his four inning stint. Arneson gave up four runs in the third including a solo home run to Kenley Jansen and two-out, two-run double to Brian Mathews.
The Dragons took an early lead in the second when Waring singled and went to third on McKennon's single. With one out, Waring scored on an unusual sacrifice fly by Jason Bour. Bour's foul pop down the right field line was caught by Mathews, the Great Lakes first baseman, as he sprinted with his back to the infield. When Waring tagged at third, Mathews turned to throw home but the throw glanced off the helmet of Dayton first base coach Darren Bragg and Waring scored easily.
The Dragons and Loons meet again Saturday at 7:05 at Dow Diamond in the third game of the season. Right-hander Luis Montano will start for the Dragons against Great Lakes right-hander Kyle Smit. The game can be heard on Kiss Country 101.7 FM and at www.daytondragons.com.
The Dragons home opener is Monday at 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field against the Fort Wayne Wizards.
Notes: Waring led the 10-hit Dragons attack with three hits including the first home run hit by the Dragons this season...The Dayton bullpen combined to throw four innings and allowed only one hit and an unearned run. Philippe Valiquette and Enerio Del Rosario each tossed a perfect inning following Young's outing.
