Evansville Otters News Release
The Washington Wild Things took advantage of Evansville Otters defensive miscues in the fifth inning and Ryan Douglass pitched a complete game, shutout as the Wild Things defeated the Evansville Otters 3-0.
The two starting pitchers were the story from the outset. Ryan Douglass did not allow a baserunner until the fourth innings and kept the Otters hitless through the first 4.1 innings. For those first four innings, Brian Kroll was equal to the task, allowing just two hits over that time.
The Wild Things cracked the scoreboard with a pair of hits and an error in the fifth inning to make it 2-0. Washington made it 3-0 in the sixth. With one out, Chris Carter tripled off the centerfield fence. One batter later, Mike Arbinger grounded a ball to Frank Scott who was drawn in at second. Scott threw home in time, but the ball was dropped at the plate, allowing Carter to score.
The rest of the night belonged to Douglass (6-1) who went the full nine innings, allowing four hits in shutting down the Otters offense.
Kroll (2-3) went six innings, allowing six hits, three runs (two earned), walking one and striking out six. Kyle Pawelczyk made his Otters debut a successful one, pitching two scoreless innings, fanning four.
Tomorrow will bring the second game of the series with Andre Simpson (2-4) getting the Independence Day start for Evansville. Aaron Gangi (3-2) will take the hill for the Wild Things. Game time is 6:05 p.m. CST.
