Johnson City Doughboys News Release

The Johnson City Doughboys got superb performances from their pitching staff and some timely hitting on their way to a 7-1 road win over the Bluefield Ridge Runners on Tuesday night.

Johnson City (6-10) held one of the top offenses in the league to just one run on seven hits, and picked up sixteen strikeouts to just two walks. RHP Steven Casey set the tone with four scoreless innings and seven strikeouts in his first start of the summer, and LHP Miguel Fulgencio (W, 1-0), RHP Cade Pilchard, LHP Leo O'Shinski, and RHP Andrew Ronne followed suit with efficient outings in relief.

The win snaps a four game losing streak for the Doughboys as well as a streak of three straight games ending on walk-off hits.

Johnson City jumped in front, 4-0, in the second inning after an RBI single from Conner James, a wild pitch that scored Cade Sumbler, and a two-RBI single from Steven Ondina.

Later, Joe Vetrano crushed the longest Doughboys home run of the season in the fifth inning, hitting a 441-foot two-run shot over the batter's eye in center field to give Johnson City a 6-0 lead. Conner James added another RBI single later in the same inning to give Johnson City a 7-0 advantage.

Chyran Cruse finished 3-for-4, Vetrano finished 2-for-5, and James finished 2-for-4 in the win.

Bluefield (6-10) got their lone run on a solo home run from Kendal Ewell in the fifth inning.

Johnson City will look to pull off their first sweep of the summer when they travel back to Bluefield to take on the Ridge Runners on Wednesday evening in the final game of the series. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
