Dogs Use Huge Fifth to Beat Goldeyes
ROSEMONT, IL - The Winnipeg Goldeyes lost 11-9 to the Chicago Dogs at Impact Field on Friday night.
The Goldeyes built a 4-0 lead, scoring a single run in each of the first four innings. Josh Romanski singled to centre with one out in the first, and scored two batters later when Tucker Nathans doubled to right-centre.
Grant Heyman drew a leadoff walk in the second. Two batters later, Jordan Ebert was hit by a pitch, and the Goldeyes extended the lead to 2-0 on a Gavin Stupienski infield single. The runners were in motion on the play, and Heyman managed to score from second base.
Reggie Abercrombie singled through the left side with one out in the third and was doubled home on another drive to right-centre from Nathans.
Josh Mazzola led off the top of the fourth with a mammoth home run to left that extended the lead to 4-0.
The Dogs cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Rubi Silva led off with an infield single and took third on a Trey Vavra double down the left field line. Back-to-back groundouts from Joe Benson and Dalton Blaser pulled the Dogs within 4-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Chicago scored eight runs and sent 13 batters to the plate to take a 10-4 lead. Michael Falsetti led off with a home run to left. Kenny Wilson tripled to right-centre and scored the tying run on a bloop double down the right field line from Edwin Arroyo. After Silva sacrificed Arroyo to third, Vavra singled through the left side to drive home the lead run. The Dogs went on to load the bases and stretched the lead to 7-5 on a two-run double down the left field line by Stephen Perez. Falsetti added a two-out, two-run double that was followed by an RBI single from Wilson.
The Goldeyes rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh to climb back within one run. With the bases loaded and one out, Josh McAdams beat out a potential inning-ending double play that scored Matt McCann with the Goldeyes' fifth run. Heyman lined a two-out, two-run double to centre that brought home Abercrombie and McAdams. Mazzola then connected for another home run, this one a two-run shot that just cleared the left field wall.
The Dogs answered back with an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out, RBI single from Arroyo.
Kaohi Downing pitched a scoreless top of the eighth, while Taylor Grover struck out two in a perfect ninth to earn his ninth save of the year.
Jared Carkuff (5-4) started for the Dogs and picked up the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits in six innings. Carkuff walked two and struck out eight. It was Carkuff's first career win as a starting pitcher.
Kevin McGovern (4-9) started for the Goldeyes and took the loss, allowing 10 runs, six earned, on 11 hits in four and two-thirds innings. McGovern walked three and struck out seven. McGovern struck out Falsetti in the bottom of the third, which was his 100th of the night. McGovern is now one of only two pitchers in American Association history to strike out 100-plus batters in four different seasons.
