
'Dogs Split Twin Bill with Saints

LINCOLN - The Saltdogs split a double header with the St. Paul Saints Tuesday night, taking the first game 7-4 but dropping the nightcap 8-4 in front of 2,878 fans at Haymarket Park.
With two outs and the game tied in the bottom of the sixth, Brandon Jones began a rally by doubling to right center field. Pat Trettel followed with an RBI double down the left field line. Joe Ramos and Blake Gailen then belted back-to-back home runs to give the 'Dogs a 7-3 lead.
Nick Schreiber (5-0) pitched 1 1/3 in relief, allowing a run on a hit to pick up the victory. Alberto Rolon (4-1) gave up a season-high seven runs on 11 hits in six innings to take the loss. PJ Zocchi nailed down his league-leading 11th save.
In game two of the double header St. Paul jumped out early and never looked back.
Jake Schmidt (5-0) pitched five innings, allowing three unearned runs on five hits while striking out four and walking one to earn the win. Tommy Palica (2-1) went four innings, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out seven to suffer the loss.
The highlight of the game for the Saltdogs came in the top of the fifth inning when manager Marty Scott came out to pull Palica from the game, followed by a P.A. announcement stating that the Philadelphia Phillies had just bought Palica's contract (full release to follow).
Curt Smith went 3-for-4 and finished a triple shy of the cycle in the loss.
The teams meet tonight at 7:05 p.m. for the series finale. Tim Brown (3-4) is expected to pitch for the Saltdogs. Radio coverage begins at 6:35 p.m. on KFOR 1240.
