St. Paul Saints News Release
LINCOLN, NE (June 22, 2011) - The good news is the St. Paul Saints won't have to return to Haymarket Park in the regular season. For the sixth straight season they will finish with a losing record in Lincoln as they lost 9-2 on Wednesday night to the Lincoln Saltdogs.
Saints starter Matt Long didn't have it as the Saltdogs built up a big lead early and perhaps the first inning was a sign of things to come. With one out Gavin Dickey struck out, but reached first when the ball got passed catcher Alex Garabedian. He stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single from Jorge Cortes to put the Saltdogs up 1-0.
After Long cruised through the second all unraveled in the third. With one out Dickey reached on a single to center and Phil Hawke followed with a two-run home to center, his seventh of the season and the seventh homer Long has allowed this season. Curt Smith doubled and scored on Cortes' single to make it 4-0. Pat Trettel followed with a single, moving Smith to second and Smith advanced to third on a fly out. With two outs Joe Ramos hit a grounder to short that Adam Frost bobbled and then threw high to first allowing the fourth run of the inning to score and made it 5-0.
Long departed in the fourth after allowing two more runs on a two-run single by Hawke to give the Saltdogs a 7-0 lead. Long lasted just 3.0 innings allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits while walking one and striking out one. The Saints turned the ball over to Robert Coe, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater product, who made his professional debut.
Coe, who is relatively new as a pitcher, and perhaps the nerves showed when he hit the first batter he faced on the second pitch he threw, but he settled down and then some after that. Coe hurled 3.0 hitless, shutout innings of work, walking one and striking out two for an impressive professional debut.
The Saints scored their only two runs in the sixth when Shane Costa singled and Ole Sheldon doubled him to third. Jason Cooper's grounder off of pitcher Tim Brown's glove for an infield single scored Costa. Two batters later Ronnie Bourquin singled home Sheldon.
The Saints take Thursday off and begin a three game series against the Wichita Wingnuts on Friday at Midway Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send LHP Donald Brandt (3-2, 4.15) to the mound. It is "Show Me the Mummy" Night presented by King Tut at the Science Museum. It is also Friday Night Fireworks presented by Xcel Energy. The game can be heard live on Relevant Radio 1330.
