Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 7-3 to the Fort Worth Cats at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Wednesday night.
The Cats scored all of their runs with a seven-run top of the third against Wingnuts' starter Junior Guerra.
Wichita grabbed a 1-0 lead when Josh Workman ripped a two-out, solo home run down the right field line against Cats' starter Mike Bacsik.
Jeremy Sauceda started the Cats' rally in the third, hitting a leadoff home run that was carried by the wind over the right field wall. Aljay Davis followed with a walk and came around on Brian Fryer's triple to right-center field. Travis Metcalf fouled out to right, but Kelley Gulledge singled through a drawn in infield on the left side to give Fort Worth a 3-1 lead.
Trent Lockwood grounded a single through the right side to put runners on the corners, setting up an RBI double off the center field fence from John Allen. Guerra retired Marcos Rodriguez on a popout to short, but Cory Morales broke the game open with a two-run double down the left field line that increased the Cats' lead to 6-1. Sauceda, who opened the inning with the game-tying homer, drove in the seventh run with a double to left field.
Guerra shut down the Cats over the next four innings. Guerra took the loss, allowing the seven earned runs on nine hits. Guerra walked four and struck out four.
The Wingnuts rallied against Bacsik in the bottom of the sixth. With first and second and one out, Jorge Delgado doubled to the fence in left-center to cut the lead to 7-2. After Workman drew a walk to load the bases, Edwin Bellorin hit a deep drive to the warning track in left-center field. Sauceda made a running, leaping grab to rob Bellorin of an extra-base hit. The play resulted in a sacrifice fly that made it 7-3 Fort Worth, but the Wingnuts were kept off the board through the remainder of the game.
Bacsik earned the win, allowing three earned runs over six innings. Bacsik gave up six hits, walked two, and struck out three.
Cody White pitched three shutout innings to close out the game and earn the save.
Brandon Mathes and Kendy Batista each worked a scoreless inning in relief of Guerra. With a crowd of 3,412, the Wingnuts celebrated their 500,000th fan in franchise history.
The series concludes on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Ryan Hinson takes on right-hander Dwayne Pollok. For tickets, call the Wingnuts' office at (316) 264-NUTS or visit the Wingnuts' official website at www.wichitawingnuts.com.
