Dogs Snap 12 Game Skid, Win in Comeback Fashion

Rosemont, Ill.- In come-from-behind fashion for the first time in franchise history, the Chicago Dogs rallied to defeat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 6-5 on a Family Sunday from Impact Field, snapping their 12 game skid.
In the second straight contest between the two teams decided by one run, Chicago built a 3-0 lead thanks to four hits off Winnipeg starter Charle Rosario in the bottom of the first. All three runs came via two-out base hits, with one apiece from Jonathan Moroney, Dalton Blaser, and Matt Dean. Michael Baca struck out looking to end the inning with two men in scoring position.
As the Goldeyes began to chip away it appeared as though the Baca strike out would loom large. Winnipeg answered immediately in their half of the second with two runs on two walks and one hit against Chicago starter Josh Goossen-Brown.
The Goldeyes ultimately took the lead with two more runs in the top of the fourth on RBI base hits from Gavin Stupienski and Andrew Sohn. Winnipeg starter Charle Rosario settled in after his turbulent first inning to retire 11 Dogs batters in a row and face the minimum over his next four innings.
With the score still in their favor at 4-3, Winnipeg tacked on a two-out insurance run in the sixth thanks to a double from Jordan Ebert and a pinch-hit run-scoring single from Kevin Garcia. Despite the run, Goossen-Brown was able to complete the inning and earn just the second start of the year for the Dogs of at least six innings.
While the six innings may not have seemed important for Goossen-Brown at the time, they would prove to be in the very next half-inning as Blaser got his starter off the hook with a two-run opposite field home run to left to notch the game at five. For Blaser it was his fourth hit of the series and his first home run as a Dog.
With the game still even at 5-5, and his starter up over 100 pitches, Winnipeg manager Rick Forney sent Rosario back out for the seventh inning. Chicago leadoff man Zach Racusin led off the frame with an infield single and was then replaced at first base on a fielder's choice by Edwin Arroyo. With a left-hander scrambling to warm up in the bullpen, Rosario stayed in to face Treysen Vavra.
Vavra served the first offering of the at-bat from Rosario into shallow left field for a base hit to extend his season-long hitting streak to 15 games and put two aboard with one out for the Dogs.
With no relievers ready yet, Rosario then had to stay in the face Chicago left-handed hitter Craig Maddox. Maddox broke the tie with an RBI single to right field to score Arroyo and push the Dogs in front 6-5.
Brandon Shimo would work a scoreless seventh and eighth before Chicago closer Kaohi Downing came on for a save opportunity in the ninth. After Jordan Ebert led off the frame with a double, Downing was able to escape the jam without allowing another hit and earn his second save of the year. Shimo earned the win with his two scoreless frames-his first of the year.
With the win, Chicago snaps a 12 game losing streak and picks up their first ever victory at Impact Field. Winnipeg falls to 9-7 with the loss. The two teams will meet again next weekend for a three-game set at Shaw Park in Winnipeg.
Chicago will be home again for a three-game series with the Sioux Falls Canaries beginning Monday at 7:05 p.m.
