
RailCats Sign Infielder Will Savage

GARY, Ind. - The RailCats signed infielder Will Savage to his first Independent Professional Baseball contract before Sunday's 10-2 loss vs. Fargo-Moorhead and placed infielder Randy Santiesteban on the Disabled List retroactive to June 2 with a strained left hamstring. Savage made his IPBF debut after coming in at shortstop as a defensive replacement in the top of the seventh and recorded an infield single in his first at-bat in the eighth.
Savage spent the 2017 campaign between the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps and the Class-A, Short-Season Connecticut Tigers. In 30 games with Connecticut, Savage hit .222 with eight RBIs, five stolen bases and 11 runs. In 25 games with the Whitecaps, the 23-year-old hit .215 with five RBIs and four steals.
Savage was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 16th round of the 2016 MLB Draft as a junior out of Columbia University after garnering Second Team All-Ivy League Honors. Savage began his professional baseball career with the Connecticut Tigers in 2016, batting .200 with one home run, 21 RBIs and 11 stolen bases.
The middle infielder led the Ivy League in 2016 with a .367 batting average and 20 stolen bases and led the Lions in at-bats (158), runs (36), hits (58) and on-base percentage (.463). The Bronx, N.Y., native was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and the Ivy League Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2014.
The RailCats resume their 10-game homestand vs. the reigning champion Winnipeg Goldeyes on Monday night at 7:10. LHP Jeff McKenzie (1-0, 8.00) opposes Goldeyes' All-Star LHP Kevin McGovern (1-1, 3.18) in the first meeting of the season between the two teams
Monday's game is another All You Can Eat Night and Metro PCS Monday. All You Can Eat $10 wristbands for hot dogs, popcorn and peanuts can be purchased at the front window and the concessions stands before and during the game.
