Chicago Dogs News Release
Winnipeg, MB. - Kevin McGovern struck out 14 Dogs batters over seven and two-thirds innings and the Goldeyes defeated Chicago 2-1 Saturday night at Shaw Park in Winnipeg.
The Dogs fell victim to stellar starting pitching for the second straight game as McGovern had his strikeout stuff working early. Each of the first nine outs that the left-hander recorded came by way of the punch out. At one point, McGovern strung together eight straight strikeouts, setting a Goldeyes franchise record for consecutive batters fanned.
The second batter of the game for Chicago, Edwin Arroyo, doubled to give the Dogs one of their two threats in the game. However, Arroyo was stranded at second, and the Dogs would not threaten again until the eighth.
Before that, Winnipeg (12-9) would score their only runs of the game thanks to a four-hit bottom of the fourth. RBI base hits from Goldeyes catcher Kevin Garcia and third baseman Josh Mazzola plated the two tallies.
With McGovern having set down 11 Dogs in a row, Chicago right fielder Jonathan Moroney led off the eighth inning with a double down the left field line. A ground out by left fielder Dalton Blaser and a sacrifice fly from third baseman Matt Dean scored Moroney, but the Dogs wouldn't put another man on base in the game.
Victor Capellan worked a one-two-three ninth for the second straight night to earn his American Association leading tenth save.
Chicago starter Kylin Turnbull lasted five innings for Chicago, allowing six hits and two earned runs, while striking out three. He took the loss dropping his record on the season to 1-3. With the win, McGovern moves to 2-1 on the year.
Chicago (4-16) will look to stave off the sweep when the two teams meet again in Sunday's series finale. Josh Goossen-Brown makes the start for Chicago.
First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast at www.thechicagodogs.com/broadcasts/ with the Crowne Plaza Pregame Show beginning at 12:40 p.m.
