Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (11-9) beat the Chicago Dogs 5-2 at Shaw Park on Friday night.
Goldeyes' starting pitcher Charle Rosario (2-1) earned the win, pitching seven shutout innings on just four hits. Rosario walked two and struck out three.
"Charle was fantastic today," said Goldeyes' manager Rick Forney. "He gave us seven really strong innings. We had some timely hitting, and got a big homer from Mazzola in the eighth. Victor was sharp in the ninth to seal the deal."
In the bottom of the second, Josh Mazzola reached on a two-out, infield single. Jordan Edgerton followed with a double to right-centre that drove in Mazzola with the game's first run.
The Goldeyes stretched their lead to 4-0 with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Matt McCann walked leading off and took second when Andrew Sohn singled to right. After Victor Cruzado flied out to right field, Reynaldo Rodriguez drew a full-count walk to load the bases. Jordan Ebert then walked on a full count to force home McCann with the Goldeyes' second run. Kevin Garcia was next and lined a single to left on an 0-2 count that ushered in Sohn and Rodriguez.
"My thought was to go for at least one, just hit a deep fly ball or something," said Garcia on his fifth-inning single. "He threw two really good cutters inside, and my mentality had to change. If I was getting beat, I was going to get beat inside. I wasn't going to let him beat me to the big part of the field."
Garcia threw out two more runners trying to steal, catching Shawon Dunston Jr. in the first, and Jonathan Moroney in the fourth. Garcia is now 7-for-17 this season in throwing out potential base stealers.
The Dogs cut the Goldeyes' lead in half in the top of the eighth on a two-out, two-run double to left from Moroney.
Mazzola answered back in the bottom half with a two-out, solo home run to left.
Victor Capellan struck out two during a perfect top of the ninth to earn his ninth save of the year.
Sohn finished the night with three hits.
Game two of the three-game series is Saturday evening at 6:05 p.m. Kevin McGovern (1-1, 3.13) faces left-hander Kylin Turnbull (1-2, 5.17).
