Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks News Release
FARGO - After being held to just three combined runs in the last two games, the RedHawks scored the game-winning run in their first at-bat tonight. Fargo-Moorhead (10-11) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to RBIs from Devan Ahart and Keury De La Cruz and took advantage of a fantastic start from Benji Waite to defeat the Gary SouthShore RailCats (13-8) by a score of 3-1 on an interesting evening of weather at Newman Outdoor Field.
With two on and nobody out in the first, Devan Ahart's single scored Tim Colwell from second base to give the RedHawks the early lead. Keury De La Cruz was up to bat next and skied a sacrifice fly to left field to score Brennan Metzger from third and give Fargo-Moorhead a 2-0 lead.
Each team scored a run in the sixth with the RedHawks' run coming on a two-out RBI triple from Leo Pina that brought home Charlie Valerio from first. The triple was Pina's first of the season.
Benji Waite went six innings for his first win of the season and gave up one unearned run on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks to move to 1-1 for the year.
Gary starter Daniel Minor was credited with the loss after giving up three runs in six innings on the mound for the RailCats. Minor struck out two and walked one for his second loss of the year.
Andrew Woeck came on in the sixth inning and bridged the gap of the middle innings with two shutout frames to set up Randy McCurry with the save opportunity in the ninth.
Holding a 3-1 lead heading into the ninth, McCurry struck out three batters to seal the win and snap a season-long three-game losing streak for the RedHawks.
Fargo-Moorhead will look to for a series split with a win in the fourth game of this homestand against Gary SouthShore. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00PM and the first 2,500 fans will receive a free RedHawks cap courtesy of Sanford Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.
