Dogs Drop Doubleheader to St. Paul

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Tony Rosselli went 2-for-3 at the plate, but the Chicago Dogs offense couldn't get going as the St. Paul Saints took game one of the Wednesday doubleheader, 4-0, at CHS Field.

It was a tough game for the Dogs bats, compiling just four hits while leaving six men on base. Back-to-back singles by Rosselli and Keon Barnum, in addition to a walk by Jordan Dean, loaded the bases in the top of the second. However, the Saints induced a flyout to keep the shutout alive.

After allowing just one run via a sacrifice fly through three innings, Dogs starter Austin Wright (0-1) ran into trouble in the fourth inning. An RBI double by Burt Reynolds, coupled with some costly errors and RBI groundouts, gave the Saints three runs in the frame, building a 4-0 lead.

Three scoreless innings of relief by Brandon Shimo and Ryan Thurston kept St. Paul at bay, but Chicago couldn't muster enough offense to take down the Saints.

Game Two: Saints 6, Dogs 5

The Dogs mashed three home runs in the second inning of game two of Wednesday's doubleheader against the St. Paul Saints but surrendered six unanswered runs en route to a 6-5 loss at CHS Field.

The Dogs offense exploded in the second inning, scoring five runs on seven hits. After Victor Roache led off with a single, Keon Barnum launched an opposite-field home run, his second of the season, to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. Two batters later, Harrison Smith sent one over the left field fence for a home run of his own, making it 3-0.

The Dogs weren't done yet, as Rey Gonzalez singled to bring up David Olmedo-Barrera, who belted the Dogs' third home run of the inning for a 5-0 lead.

St. Paul wouldn't go quietly into the night, however, as the Saints rallied with three runs in the second via an RBI single from Blake Schmit and home run by Jeremy Martinez. They added two more in the third to tie the game at five.

Carlos Zambrano entered the game in the sixth to keep things tied. He would do just that, striking out two Saints in the process. The seventh inning featured more of the same for the MLB veteran, inducing three quick groundouts to push the game into extra innings, finishing with two scoreless innings of work in which he walked no Saints and struck out two.

The Dogs offense continued to slumber in the late innings and could not figure out Saints right hander Todd Van Steensel, managing just two walks and no hits against the Australian.

Josh Goossen-Brown came on in relief of Zambrano in the eighth and hit Blake Schmit with a pitch to start the inning, eventually finding himself in a bases-loaded jam with one out. Saints center fielder Dan Motl lined a ball off of Goossen-Brown, who picked it up and gunned down Schmit at home for the second out of the inning. However, the Dogs could not dodge two bullets in one inning as second baseman Josh Allen played hero, drawing a walk-off walk to secure a 6-5 win for the Saints and a sweep of the day's doubleheader.

The Dogs look to take a win from the series against St. Paul on Thursday as they send opening day starter D.J. Snelten (1-0) to the mound. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
