The AirHogs got off to a strong start in the series finale of their 3 game set again the Sioux Falls Canaries. After a four hit first inning that saw Li Ning and Josh Prince cross the plate, the AirHogs took an early 2-0 lead.
Zech Lemond would find his grove on the mound as he would go 6 inning allowing 3 runs, 8 hits, no walks and 4 strikeouts.
Zech held the 'Birds in check through the first four innings, but allowed back to back hits in the fourth with 2 outs to allow a run and then four straight two out singles in the fifth inning. That put the Canaries on top 3-2.
The AirHogs would rally with a two run in the bottom half of the 5th. Recently activated Johnathan Moroney scored on a daring steal of home in the inning. Later Chen Junpeng would drive in Liu Jinjun on an RBI groundout. The AirHogs had another opportunity to score in the Bottom of the 6th as they loaded the bases but were unable to push across a run.
In the top of the 7th the Canaries offense would explode as they pushed across 7 runs. After getting the first out of the inning, AirHogs reliever Ryan Smith allowed 6 of 7 batters to reach base, resulting in 3 runs scoring and Andrew Ely walking up to the plate with the bases loaded. Ely then delivered the big blow for Sioux Falls as he hit a Grand Slam to left center to break the game open 10-4.
Both teams were held scoreless the rest of the way, brining us to the 10-4 final score.
For the Canaries Rielly Hovis (1-0) was the winner and for the AirHogs Ryan Smith (0-2) took the loss.
The AirHogs will have a travel day tomorrow as they will begin their first road trip of the season taking on the Fargo Moorhead RedHawks Friday night. Travis Ballew will be on the mound for the AirHogs. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Tune in on mixlr.com/txairhogs
