Dog Days Of Summer, Reading Beats Portland 11-5 In Four-Hour Contest

(Portland, ME) - The Reading Phillies (36-51) clubbed 15 hits and earned 10 walks, defeating the Portland Sea Dogs (48-38) 11-5 on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. At 4 fours and 6 minutes, it was the longest 9-inning contest at Hadlock Field this season.

Kris Johnson (7-4) took his first loss since June 4, surrendering five runs on nine hits in 4.2 IP. Johnson had his scoreless streak snapped at 23.1 IP when Reading took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Lou Marson's double-play ground out, scoring Javon Moran.

Fabio Castro (6-1) worked 5.2 IP on seven hits and two runs to earn the win for Reading. Mickey Hall touched Castro with a 2-run single with two outs in the fourth inning, cutting the Reading deficit to 6-2.

Portland scored three runs in the 9th inning off Sam Walls. Tony Granadillo blasted a 2-run homer, his second of the series and 4th of the year. Mark Wagner blooped a run-scoring single to center field for the game's final run.

Reading used a 4-run third inning off Johnson to take a 5-0 lead. Jeremy Slayden, Neil Sellers and Mike Eylward had consecutive two-out run-scoring hits. The trio finished 7-for-15 with 8 RBI.

Portland's pitching staff yielded 10 walks and the bullpen allowed six runs in 4.1 IP. T.J. Large allowed a run in the sixth inning on a bases-loaded walk to Slayden. Carlos Vasquez issued three walks and three runs over 1.1 IP. Daniel Haigwood surrendered four hits and two runs in 1.2 IP.

Reading left 15 runners on base but went 7-for-17 with runners-in-scoring position.

The two teams will wrap up their 4-game series on Monday afternoon beginning at 12:00 PM. RHP Kyle Jackson (5-1, 5.05) will face RHP Travis Minix (1-2, 3.86). Catch all the action on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network beginning at 11:40 AM with the Pre-Game Show built by Correct Deck.

Notes...Jeff Corsaletti extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games with a double in the fourth...Both lineups reached base safely - Bubba Bell and Jake Blalock were the lone players without hits.
