Aerodynamics...

Road Warriors...Akron continued to play excellent baseball away from home last night, doing just enough offensively and making big pitches at the right time in a 2-1 victory over Binghamton. RHP Jim Deters was a surprise starter but threw the ball great, working into the sixth and allowing just a run while scattering five hits in 5.1 innings. LHP Reid Santos did allow an inherited run to score which tied the game momentarily, but recovered to record seven big outs before newly-minted All-Star Scott Roehl notched the final four outs in perfect fashion to close the contest. The win guarantees a winning road trip for Akron, as the club has already won five of six on this current eight-game expedition. The Aeros have not had a losing road trip since getting swept in Bowie May 2nd-4th; since then Akron is 21-6 away from home, including a franchise-record 11-game road winning streak from June 4th-June 21st.

The Accidental Starter...Starter Jim Deters was pushed into service last night when scheduled starter Frank Herrmann earned a promotion to Class AAA Buffalo for a spot-start. Herrmann impressed in his first appearance above Double-A but got no run support, suffering the loss in a 2-0 defeat at Rochester. The right-hander from Harvard University very nearly matched former Minnesota Twins All-Star Francisco Liriano pitch-for-pitch, allowing just single runs in the third and fifth innings (Liriano worked six shutout innings). Herrmann departed after holding the Red Wings to two runs and eight hits in seven impressive innings, walking three and striking out four. He also allowed a solo home run. Herrmann is expected to return to the Aeros for his next scheduled start Thursday against Bowie.

What a Difference Two Months Makes...Earlier this year we remarked on the turnaround the Aeros enjoyed between May 6th and June 6th, during which time Akron went from 13-18 and seven games out of first to 32-26 and just two games out of first. Well, with today being the 6th of July, we figured it was time to take another 30-day snapshot of the club's fortunes. In the last month Akron has gone from 32-26 to 54-33, and from two games back to 4.5 games in front in the Southern Division. The Aeros have gone 22-7 (a .759 winning percentage) in the last month, and capped June by reaching the 20-win plateau in a month for only the sixth time in team history (the team is already 4-1 in July). So for those of you scoring along at home, Akron has played .732 baseball (41-15) since hitting the low-water mark of five games below .500 May 6th.

Did You Know...Aeros 3B Wes Hodges is tied for second in all of minor league baseball with nine sacrifice flies this season (Larry Cobb of the Kane County Cougars in the Class A Midwest League leads the way with 10). Hodges hit a total of five sac flies in 104 games for Kinston last year, his first professional season.
