Defenders Hold on for 6-5 Win

Connecticut Defenders News Release

NEW BRITAIN- Garrett Broshuis' brilliance was on full display as he threw six perfect innings in a 6-5 topping over the New Britain Rock Cats.

Olmo Rosario started off the game with a jack to left field as the Defs took an early 1-0 lead.

The Defenders scored once again in the fourth as Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Adam Witter belted back-to-back doubles as the advantage pushed to 2-0.

Antoan Richardson singled home Carlos Sosa in the fifth and Witter crushed his third home run in two days in the sixth on a two-run moon shot to right. The bomb extended the lead to 5-0 and on the other side of the ball, things couldn't have looked any better.

Broshuis was in cruise control. Through six innings, not a single Rock Cat had gotten aboard. The attempt at perfection was broken up on an error by Dave Maroul at first and when it was all said and done Broshuis went seven, gave up three runs (one earned) on two hits, walked no one and fanned six.

The bullpen stumbled through the remainder of the game but the Rock Cats never tied things up or took the lead. Broshuis won his eighth game to improve to 8-6, Anthony Swarzak lost his seventh and Kelvin Pichardo saved his sixth.

The Defenders and Rock Cats will play the fourth and final game of the series on Monday at 7:05pm as Connecticut will look to take three of the contests. The AT&T Real Yellow Pages Pre-Game Show will start at 6:50pm on the Defenders' Radio Network or anywhere in the world at ctdefeders.com.
