Dock Spiders Can't Hang On

June 20, 2019 - Northwoods League (Northwoods) - Fond du Lac Dock Spiders News Release

FOND DU LAC, WI - The Fond du Lac Dock Spiders (11-13) and the Madison Mallards (17-7) went down to the wire. The Dock Spiders had the game in their hands and then let it slip away.

It all started out with Aaron Funk (Arkansas-Little Rock) went to the mound for the Dock Spiders and absolutely dealt. Funk was back out for some revenge after his first outing against the Mallards.

Funk went five and a third of allowing one run and striking out eight. The Dock Spiders bullpen unfortunately couldn't hang on to the lead late.

Kellen Sarver (Illinois) started the Dock Spiders off with an RBI single in the bottom of the first to give them a 1-0 lead. A Zack Prajzner (Notre Dame) sac fly in the fourth would give the Dock Spiders a 2-0 lead.

After the Mallards struck for one in the sixth, it was Aaron Anderson (Flagler) who delivered a two-run home run and got the "Fondy Faithfuls" to quickly become a fan. That would make it 4-1 going into the seventh.

The Mallards would then strike for another one in the seventh and cut it to 4-2. Bullpen troubles happened and the Mallards put up a three spot in the top of the ninth to take the lead at 5-4.

In the bottom of the ninth, Sam Novitske (Oregon) lead off with a single. A dropped fly ball would get a runner to second after Novitske was thrown out at third.

The Dock Spiders got a runner in scoring position with less than two outs and couldn't produce the tying run.

The Dock Spiders will take on the Mallards tomorrow night at 6:35 PM CST and the first 500 fans will receive an ice cream scooper as the giveaway.
