Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - Derek Dietrich hit a triple and two singles on Thursday night, continuing a torrid start to the second half of the season. But for the second straight night an overall lack of offense led to an 8-2 defeat at the hands of the Cedar Rapids Kernels (9-11, 41-49). The loss is the third straight for Bowling Green (9-11, 50-40), leaving the Hot Rods with a 1-4 record on the nine-game road trip.
Dietrich's outing began with one out in the first as he tripled off the right-center field wall, narrowly missing another home run. He scored the game's first run when Phil Wunderlich lofted a sac fly to left field on the next pitch for a 1-0 lead.
The Kernels re-took the lead with a two-run first inning before Dietrich and Co. rallied to tie it in the third. Dietrich started the rally with a single to right before Wunderlich was hit by a pitch. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Nick Schwaner forced home Dietrich with a groundout to even the game at 2-2.
From there, it was all Cedar Rapids against George Jensen (L; 8-4). Ricky Alvarez made it a 4-2 in the third with a long two-run homer over the left-center field wall. An inning later, Cedar Rapids scored four more runs highlighted by a two-run homer from Jeremy Cruz for an 8-2 lead.
Jensen lasted just 3.2 innings, falling to 0-2 in two starts on the road trip. He gave up career highs in runs (eight) and hits (eleven), striking out three without giving up a walk. In two starts on the trip he's pitched 6.2 innings and allowed eleven earned runs on nineteen hits.
He was outdueled by Heath Nichols, who became the second straight Kernels pitcher to throw seven innings against the Hot Rods. He allowed two early runs on five hits, but allowed just one base runner over his final four innings to improve to 6-5.
Dietrich finished the game with three hits before getting plunked in his fourth trip to the plate. The only other hits for the Hot Rods belonged to Keith Castillo and Luke Bailey.
The Hot Rods got great relief work by Jimmy Patterson, Steve Hiscock, and Austin Hubbard. The trio combined for 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk amongst them.
The Hot Rods now play their final game in Cedar Rapids at 6:35 PM on Friday night. RHP Eliazer Suero (5-3, 4.39) draws the start against RHP A.J. Schugel (3-2, 2.45). You can follow the game with Tom Gauthier at 6:10 PM on 1340 WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
