Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Kane County Cougars right-hander Greg Billo tossed his third straight quality start on Thursday night but suffered a hard-luck loss, as the Cougars lost, 3-1, against the Lansing Lugnuts at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars have scored just one run so far in two games in the series and now are 4-10 against the Eastern Division this season. It is only their second losing series out of seven in the 2nd Half.
Billo's only blemish came in the top of the first. After striking out his first two batters, he gave up a solo homer to Jake Marisnick, and Lansing never gave back the lead. Billo (7-2), whose ERA went from 1.37 to 1.38 in the loss, gave up one run on five hits, walked one and fanned four. Marisnick's homer was just the second one Billo has allowed this year in 84 2/3 innings and only the 12th extra-base hit. Allen Caldwell gave up two runs in the top of the eighth inning for a 3-0 game, and Cole White logged a scoreless ninth in his Cougars debut to finish the team's mound work.
Offensively the Cougars totaled seven hits and missed out on several scoring chances. They had a runner at second with one out in the sixth, two on with no outs in the seventh and the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth and managed one run. Kevin David grounded into a double play in the eighth to score Geulin Beltre, and 3-1 became the final. Sean Nolin (2-2) got the win, and Danny Barnes recorded a two-inning save.
The Cougars (13-7, 41-48) and Lugnuts (12-8, 50-37) conclude the three-game series Friday night at 7 CT. Santiago Garrido (0-2,5.48) is scheduled to pitch against Andrew Liebel (NR). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online via kccougars.com with pregame coverage starting at 6:45 p.m.
