Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, used strong pitching from starter Mike Devine and two solo home runs to defeat the Southern Illinois Miners 2-0 on Thursday night at the Corn Crib.
The CornBelters broke through with a fifth-inning lead-off home run by Richard Lucas. Santiago Chirino led off the sixth in similar fashion with a homer down the left field line high onto the berm for a 2-0 lead and the game's only scoring.
Mike Devine (1-1) gave up only four hits in his eight-plus innings for the win, striking out eight while walking four. Alan Oaks recorded a scoreless final inning for his ninth save. Rick Teasley (7-2) worked seven innings with six hits, two walks and four strikeouts in the loss.
The home stand continues through Sunday and the series with the Miners concludes Friday at the Corn Crib with a 7 p.m. first pitch as CornBelters right-hander Cullen Babin (5-4, 4.27 ERA) matches up against Southern Illinois righty Miguel Ramirez (5-4, 3.94).
