Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners managed only four hits on Thursday night at The Corn Crib in Normal and lost 2-0 to the Normal CornBelters on the road, evening up their three-game series at one game apiece.
Rick Teasley (7-2) was solid for the Miners once again, turning in a quality start of seven innings while giving up six hits and only two solo homers, walking two but none since the first and fanning three. But the bats could not back him one night after the Miners offense produced 20 runs and 25 hits.
Starter Mike Devine pitched into the ninth for Normal, giving the CornBelters 123 total pitches before Niko Vasquez doubled to lead off the inning, the only extra-base hit of the night for the Miners. Closer Alan Oaks then came in and after striking out two, intentionally walked Chris Burke to put the tying run on base. Steve Marino then hit a fly ball deep to left, but it was caught just shy of the warning track to end the game.
The Miners will go for another series win in the rubber match on Friday night at 7:00 p.m., with Miguel Ramirez starting on the hill against Normal's Cullen Babin before the Miners return home to begin a six-game homestand.
