Albany Devils News Release
GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - The majority of the Albany Devils roster wasn't on the ice for the 12 meetings against the Adirondack Phantoms last season, but the group took care of business Saturday at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The Devils - in their final preseason contest - defeated their Time Warner Cable Cup rivals, 3-1.
"It's not just tonight, it has been a progression of the last week," said head coach Rick Kowalsky. "We saw a lot good things. This is a tough building to play in and I think it was a good challenge for us."
Three players who were assigned to Albany by New Jersey had a role in the win. Goaltender Jeff Frazee made 36 saves in his first full preseason game and Steve Zalewski and Matt Anderson each had goals.
"I'm ready to start the regular season, but it was nice to play as well as we did today," Frazee said. "It gives me confidence and it gives our team confidence. It was a good overall game."
Stephen Gionta (did not play) and Chad Wiseman were also assigned earlier in the day.
After Zalewski started the scoring at 16:11 on the power-play, rookie Joe Whitney registered the eventual game-winner. It was his second goal in two nights and he later added an assist.
"I feel confidence out there and our group is coming together," Whitney said. "We are starting to gel as a team and it's good to get two wins."
The only answer the Phantoms had for Frazee came off the stick of Jason Akeson at 15:14 of the second period.
Anderson capped the scoring with 1:56 remaining in the game on a rebound. The helpers went to Mike Banwell and Whitney.
The Devils special teams helped lead the way to the team's second preseason victory (two wins & a tie). Albany was 1-for-4 on the power play and went 0-for-5 on the penalty kill.
Next up, the Devils open the 2011-12 season with a 7 p.m. outing against the Springfield Falcons on Saturday, Oct. 8. The first 5,000 fans through the door will receive an Albany Devils magnet schedule courtesy of Realty USA.
