Rewind:
Tuesday, Devils 7 vs. MONARCHS 3
Benoit Mondou (3g, 1a) and Olivier Magnan (0g, 4a) netted four points each in a 7-3 drubbing of the Manchester Monarchs at the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Devils opened the scoring with a three-goal first period led by Mondou's two power play goals. Lowell did itself one better in the second frame with four goals, as Mondou put the finishing touches on his hat trick and Magnan notched all four of his assists. Olli Malmivaara also contributed three points (1g, 2a), while the Devils went 5-for-9 on the power play.
Friday, PIRATES 6 vs. Devils 3
Barry Tallackson's two goals were not enough to overcome a three-goal third period by Portland en route to a 6-3 win for the Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center. Tallackson opened the scoring at 7:19 of the first period and later gave the Devils a 3-2 lead with his second of the night, coming at 14:20 of the second. After Bruno St. Jacques tied the score 2:39 later, the Pirates went on to break open the game with a trio of goals in the final frame. Benoit Mondou also potted a goal in the contest.
Saturday, DEVILS 5 vs. Admirals 2
The Devils tied a team season-best when they held the Norfolk Admirals to 18 shots in a 5-2 win on Saturday. The Devils also tied their season-high, firing 44 shots on Admirals goaltender Marc Denis. Tied 1-1 heading into the second, Lowell went ahead on Petr Vrana's goal 1:50 into the period. Rosario Ruggeri then provided the eventual game-winner just over two minutes later with his third goal of the season. Four different Devils players finished the night with two points - Stephen Gionta (0g, 2a), Ivan Khomutov (1g, 1a), Ryan Murphy (1g, 1a) and Ruggeri (1g, 1a).
Sunday, Sound Tigers 3 vs. DEVILS 1
Goalie Mike Morrison's 31 saves were the difference as the Sound Tigers stifled the Devils' offense for a 3-1 win at the Tsongas Arena. Despite outshooting Bridgeport 15-4 in the second period, Lowell was on the wrong side of a 2-1 contest. Tim Jackman's shorthanded goal and Justin Bourne's even-strength marker put the Sound Tigers up by two before Nicklas Bergfors scored with under a minute left in the period. Jackman's second of the night - just 26 seconds into the third - proved to be the backbreaker.
Coming Up
The Lowell Devils play the final contest of a three-game homestand when the Hershey Bears make their sole visit of the season to the Tsongas Arena on Wednesday, March 5. The Bears currently sit in third place in the East Division, but have lost three in a row. Hershey's match against Lowell marks the fifth game of a season-long nine-game road trip for the Bears. The Bears boast one of the top defensemen in the AHL in Sami Lepisto. He ranks tied for eighth with 38 points (3g, 35a), third with 35 assists and leads the league with a +26 plus/minus rating.
The Devils then travel for two matches against division rivals, starting with the Springfield Falcons on Friday, March 7. The Falcons are clinging to the fourth spot in the Atlantic Division, having dropped four of their last six games. Springfield, however, has won four straight against Lowell and eight of nine this season. This will be the final game in the head-to-head season series. The Falcons' power play has had a 27.8% success rate (10-for-36) against the Devils this season.
Lowell will take on the Worcester Sharks the following night on Saturday, March 8. The Sharks sit seven points ahead of the Devils in the division standings, thanks in part to a 3-0-0-1 record in their last four games. Mike Iggulden notched his first hat trick of the season in Worcester's last game - a 5-4 win over Norfolk. The Devils are 3-3-0-0 against the Sharks this season.
Transactions
Center Rod Pelley was recalled on loan today by the New Jersey Devils. Pelley registered two goals, an assist and 18 penalty minutes in 11 games with Lowell.
