Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, N.Y. ¬" The Albany Devils quest for a fifth-straight win was denied by the Binghamton Senators, 3-0, Wednesday evening at the Times Union Center. Barry Brust registered his fifth shutout of the season as the Senators improve to 22-18-2-2. The Devils move to 17-21-0-3.
"You're going to have your off nights," said head coach Rick Kowalsky. "As I just told [the team], if it's a night were you don't feel like you have your hands or you don't think you have your legs, then you have to push through mentally. It's a mental thing."
Albany fell behind early, allowing two first period goals and one in the second.
"If you don't have jump, you have to play smarter," said assistant captain Brad Mills. "You have to chip pucks in and simplify your game and we didn't do that."
It took just 2:04 to pass before the first goal of the game was scored. Binghamton's Erik Condra left a drop pass in the slot for Roman Wick, who split the legs of Mike McKenna.
The Senators power-play unit, which entered the game with the AHL's best percentage (22.8 percent), made it 2-0. Geoff Kinrade found the corner from the high slot through a screen at 10:46.
In the second, the Devils successfully killed off a 5-on-3, but stalled moments later on a power play of their own. Back at even strength, the Senators added to their lead when Ryan Keller batted a rebound out of midair at 12:32.
In his fifth-consecutive start, Mike McKenna made 31 saves on 34 shots and absorbed the loss.
The Devils entered the contest riding a four-game winning streak ¬" their longest since winning five in a row from Nov 7-14 last season. One of their most recent wins come on Jan. 14 against the Senators, 4-3, at the Times Union Center. These two teams will meet a total of eight times this season and Albany currently holds a 3-2 advantage.
The Devils leave the friendly confines of the Times Union Center on Friday, Jan. 21 for a 7 p.m. contest at Hershey. They then travel on Saturday, Jan. 22 for a 7:05 p.m. contest at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
