Moose Complete Marlies Sweep with 5-2 Win
January 19, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (24-12-1-4) took on North Division rivals the Toronto Marlies (20-18-0-7) for the second time in two nights. Goaltender Tyler Weiman got the start for Manitoba and extended his win streak to five over his last five starts. Rookie Bill Sweatt scored the game winning goal while shorthanded and added another for his 10th and 11th goals of the season in a 5-2 Moose win.
The Marlies opened the scoring at 3:41 as Matt Lashoff fired a well screened shot past Moose goaltender Tyler Weiman. The Moose quickly came back at 4:06 as Marlies goaltender James Reimer was caught out of the net, allowing Moose forward Dusty Collins to pick up the loose puck and shovel in his first goal of the season.
Shortly after his goal, Collins took a run at Marlies defenceman Danny Richmond. Richmond took offence to the play and the two decided to drop the gloves. Although the fight was about even, Collins came out on top as Richmond was pulled down to the ice.
After trading shots on goal, the Moose forwards Ryan Cruthers and Josh Aspenlind broke out on a two on one. Aspenlind sent the puck off the stick of the Marlies defenceman and onto the blade of Cruthers who shot the wobbling puck past Reimer giving the Moose a 2-1 lead at 10:01.
After 20 minutes, Manitoba held a slight lead in goals, 2-1, and a significant lead in shots, 15-5. Dusty Collins' goal was the first Moose shot of the game that they followed up with a 14-2 edge through the remainder of the first period.
As the second period began, the Moose continued to control the flow of the game by getting the majority of the shots but Reimer stood strong denying the Moose opportunities.
With a Moose player in the penalty box, the penalty kill displayed why they are currently number one in the league. Moose forward Bill Sweatt received a pass from Marco Rosa and the two dashed down the ice breaking out on an odd man rush. With Rosa wide open, Sweatt faked the pass and executed a perfectly timed toe drag around the Marlies defender and snapping the puck past Reimer stick side. The goal came at 13:32 and gave the Moose a two-goal lead late in the second.
At the end of 40 minutes of play the Moose had the upper hand in the shots department with 23-11, while holding onto a 3-1 lead.
Early in the third tensions flared as Maple Leafs prospect Nazem Kadri and Yann Sauve exchanged punches, Marlies winger Jay Rosehill jumped in attacking Sauve. Kadri and Moose forward Kevin Clark both took penalties and the Moose successfully continued to get under the skin of the young Maple Leafs prospect.
At 10:17 Moose defenceman Kevin Connauton unloaded a howitzer from the top of the circle. Reimer gave up a juicy rebound off his pad and right onto the stick of Bill Sweatt who scored his eleventh goal of the season and his second goal of the game.
At 6:15 Moose forward Garth Murray was the recipient of a hit from behind courtesy of Marlies antagonist Jay Rosehill. As Murray got to his feet, Rosehill was coming for him again. Then sticks and gloves fell to the ice the two began to exchange blows as others tied up as well. The frustrated Rosehill got the best of the tilt, but in the end received a game misconduct for the initial hit from behind.
The Marlies saw some light as Dale Mitchell scored on a weak wrist shot that squeaked between the legs of Weiman.
The momentum shift was short lived as Moose winger Shawn Weller gained possession in the neutral zone and easily put away his seventh goal of the season into the open net at 18:03. Weller's empty net goal was his second into an open cage in as many nights. As time ran out for the Marlies, the Moose outshot the Marlies 33-22 and came out on top winning the game 5-2. Manitoba welcomes another North Division rival this weekend with the Abbotsford Heat in town on Friday night. The rematch of that game will go Sunday at noon on Nolan Baumgartner Bobblehead Day. The first 5,000 fans at MTS Centre on Sunday will receive a limited edition Baumgartner bobblehead doll.
