Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, NY - Facing a 3-1 deficit entering the third period, the Trenton Devils picked up their first win ever at First Arena scoring four times to defeat the Elmira Jackals 5-3 in front of 3,084 fans Wednesday night. The loss, combined with Cincinnati's 6-2 win over Reading, kept the Jackals' lead over the third place Royals at three points with six games left for each club in the regular season.
The turning point in the contest was a failed five-minute power play held by the Jackals late in the second period. Trevor Kell was given an elbowing major 3:33 left in the middle period and Elmira already holding a 3-1 advantage.
Failing to put pressure on goaltender Maxime Oullet (34 saves) leading up to the second intermission and failing to score on the remaining 1:27 coming out to start the third period proved to be the club's undoing.
Putting that penalty kill behind them, Colin Pepperall cashed in on the power play at 4:51 to draw the Devils to within 3-2.
Twenty-three seconds later, Joe Rooney tied the score at 3-3 on a back door stuff of a Tony Zancanaro centering pass at 5:14.
Chris Poli, signed out of Brown University earlier this month, scored his first professional goal with 4:05 left in the game that gave the Devils their first lead of the game at 4-3.
On the power play, Poli closed out the scoring with his second of the night at 18:39 with Chaz Johnson in the box on a boarding call.
When the dust had cleared, the Devils scored four goals on six shots in the final period to register their third win of the season when trailing after two periods.
Joel Martin took the loss in goal for the Jackals, making 16 saves on 21 shots, while Matt Gens (2nd), Jim McKenzie (8th) and Bruce Watson (7th) found the net for Elmira in a losing cause.
The Jackals embark on a three-game road trip to Ohio that begins with a Friday night visit to Cincinnati. Game time from U.S. Bank Arena is 7:30 p.m. with the Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-Off beginning the game night coverage on MAGIC-FM (92.7/97.7) and on www.jackalshockey.com.
