Columbia Inferno News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. (March 26, 2008)-The Columbia Inferno (31-27-4-6, 72 points) beat the visiting Mississippi Sea Wolves (26-38-1-2, 55 points) 8-3 on Friday night, thanks to three-point nights from winger Jeff Miles and defenseman Reid Cashman.
The Sea Wolves took a 1-0 lead 7:30 into the first period when Ryan Menei picked up a Matt Deschamps rebound and put a quick shot up and over Todd Ford's blocker shoulder. The Inferno tied the game 1-1 when Miles, while shorthanded, picked off a pass and scored unassisted on a breakaway, deking Morgan Cey to the ice and backhanding the puck over Cey's blocker shoulder. Jeremy Hall gave the Inferno a 2-1 lead on the powerplay at 17:04 when he collected a Steve McJannet rebound and beat Cey for his 15th goal of the year. Cashman notched the other assist for his first point of the night.
Cashman notched his fifth goal of the year 3:41 into the second period when he found a Kris Sparre rebound sitting in the crease and pushed it into an open net, putting the Inferno up 3-1. The Sea Wolves trimmed their deficit when, at 8:31, Gio Flamminio slammed his sixth of the year past Ford with a slapshot from the point. The Inferno then proceeded to erupt for three more goals (including two on the powerplay), as Miles, Eric Lundberg and Daniel Sparre scored to give the Inferno a 6-2 lead heading into the third period.
The Sea Wolves tried to claw their way back into the game when Brandon Scero and Andy Contois connected a pair of brilliant passes to Jason Beeman, who tapped the puck past a helpless Ford at 3:21 on the powerplay. Dan Glover reclaimed a four-goal lead at 11:45 when he took a pass from Miles and beat Cey with a quick shot from the low circle. Mac Faulkner capped the Inferno's offensive explosion when lasered his 16th goal of the year over Cey's glove from the near circle.
Cey finished with 39 saves on 47 shots, while Ford stopped 33 of 36 in the victory.
The Inferno return to the Carolina Coliseum on Friday, April 4th to host the Gwinnett Gladiators at 7:05 for the final home game of the 2007-08 regular season.
