Devils End Sound Tigers' Streak
February 17, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Bridgeport Islanders News Release
The Bridgeport Sound Tigers had their season-high six-game winning streak snapped in the second game of a two-day home-and-home series with the Lowell Devils on Saturday night. Lowell avenged a Friday night loss in Bridgeport with a 3-2 Saturday win before a home crowd of 3,262 fans at Paul E. Tsongas Arena.
The Devils ended a four game losing streak to the Sound Tigers this season and improved to 24-22-5-2. The Sound Tigers, playing shorthanded with only 15 skaters dressed, fell to 26-21-1-4.
Lowell goaltender Jordan Parise kicked aside 33 of 35 Sound Tiger shots as the Devils never trailed. Stephen Gionta, David Clarkson and Andy Greene combined to produce two of the Devils goals. Gionta and Clarkson both scored and added assists and Greene helped set up a pair of goals with assists. Gionta, assisted by Clarkson and Green, opened the scoring with his fourth of the season 5:56 into the game. Lowell carried a 1-0 lead into the second period.
Just seconds after serving a hooking penalty, Chris Minard extended Lowell's lead to 2-0 when he netted his 21st tally 2:24 into the second period. Olli Malmivaara earned the lone assist on Minard's goal.
The Sound Tigers cut into a pair of two-goal deficits in the middle period. Petteri Nokelainen buried a centering feed from Steve Regier at the 4:45 mark. Brandon Nolan also assisted Nokelainen's fifth goal of the year and in doing so extended his points streak to four games. Nolan has a regulation goal, a game-winning shootout tally and four assists in three games against Lowell during the last week's worth of action.
Clarkson regained the Devils' two-goal edge with his 15th net-finder of the year. Greene and Gionta assisted the goal to make it 3-1 Devils at 12:53. The see-saw scoring continued as Jason Pitton answered for the Sound Tigers. Pitton put in a shot off of Lowell goaltender Jordan Parise to snip the Lowell lead to 3-2 at 16:04 of the second. Masi Marjamaki centered the puck to Pitton and, along with Jamie Johnson, earned an assist on the goal.
The Sound Tigers peppered Parise with 12 third period shots, but couldn't deadlock the score. The Sound Tigers outshot the Devils 35-27. Bridgeport goaltender Wade Dubielewicz stopped 24 shots. Both teams were 0-for-3 on the power play. The Sound Tigers, after erupting for an impressive 9-for-29 power play performance over the course of six games, were held scoreless on the man advantage two nights in a row by the Devils.
The Sound Tigers had won 12 consecutive games over teams from Lowell, after having won their last eight meetings with the former Lowell Lock Monsters and the first four games against the Devils this season.
Blake Comeau (lower body injury) and Eric Boguniecki (upper body injury) were both scratched from the lineup after being banged up in Friday's 4-1 win over the Devils. Defenseman Drew Fata was called up by the parent club New York Islanders and played in the game against Lowell's parent club, the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night. The Sound Tigers signed forward Ken Magowan (from Toledo of the East Coast Hockey League) to a PTO before the game. Magowan registered three shots in his first Sound Tiger game.
The Sound Tigers return to the Arena at Harbor Yard to host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins today (Sunday, Feb. 18) at 3 p.m. They still have a seven-game home winning streak intact and have earned points in 10 of 11 games on home ice in calendar year 2007.
Sunday is Bruno Gervais Bobble-Head Giveaway Day for the first 1,500 fans and Gervais will be on hand to sign autographs after the game. Great seats are available at the Arena at Harbor Yard Box Office. For schedule and ticket information, including group discount opportunities, visit soundtigers.com or call 334-4625.
