Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights snapped their three-game losing streak with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win over the Iowa Stars on Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Carsen Germyn scored on a powerplay in overtime to decide the game.
Brent Krahn, playing in his first game since December 30th and without the benefit of a practice with the team, had an opportunity to get into the game early. He faced 13 shots in the opening period. The only one to beat him came during a delayed penalty. Chris Conner took a centering feed from Janos Vas and whipped home a wrist shot for his tenth goal of the season.
After a scoreless second period, the Knights would find themselves the recipients of two five-on-three powerplays. On the first, Andrei Taratukhin sent a rinkwide pass that Dustin Boyd hammered past Iowa goalie Dan Ellis to tie the game at one.
The Stars had their own five-on-three later but couldn't score. The most frantic action of the game came on the second five-on-three for the Knights when they hit a post but could not connect.
That set up overtime where the Knights would once again be given a powerplay when Mario Scalzo was given a high-sticking major at the 20:00 minute mark of the third.
Just 1:26 into the extra frame, Chris Lee found Germyn at the left face-off circle, and he slammed a one-time shot past Ellis for his team-leading fifth game-winning goal.
The Knights are now 31-18-3-1.
Three Stars: 1. Carsen Germyn (OMA) - Game-winning goal; 2. Dan Ellis (IOW) - 32 saves; 3. Chris Conner (IOW) - 1 goal
