Des Moines Buccaneers News Release
Des Moines' captain Patrick Grasso picked up his first hat trick of the season and never trailed in a 4-2 home victory over the Chicago Steel on Saturday night.
The Buccaneers relied on their captain to get the offense going in the first period as he cleaned up a loose puck that was sitting just to the right of Chicago's crease and on a second effort he banged home the rebound to put his team up 1-0. It looked like the Bucs would take the one goal lead into the first intermission but Grasso struck again for his 13th goal of the season as he took a puck right off a faceoff win from the left circle by Kenny Hausinger and fired a shot through traffic that Chicago goalie Daniel Vladar got a piece of but couldn't stop from trickling into the twine. Des Moines applied a lot of pressure and outshot Chicago 17-8 in the first period.
Des Moines found themselves down a man in the second period but kept rolling as just 9 seconds into the second period after a faceoff win Chandler Lindstrand gained the offensive zone from the right wing side and fed the puck over to Grasso on the left side. Grasso fired a shot that beat Vladar glove side and his hat trick goal was also his first shorthanded goal of the year. Chicago would respond though with a power play goal at the 12:07 mark of the period from Matt Kiersted through traffic right out in front of Nick MacNab.
Chicago kept the game close in the third period but the Buccaneers finally got the insurance goal they were looking for when Georgy Gorodetsky circled around the net into the slot and the puck trickled through Vladar's pads just to the goal line and Will Harrison crashing the net banged it home to give the Bucs a 4-2 lead 13:42 into the third period. Des Moines outshot Chicago 37-23 for the game and Nick MacNab finished the game with 21 saves in the win.
The Buccaneers next face Sioux Falls in a home game on Friday, February 26th.
