Derlago pours it on with hat trick against Reign, Condors win, 6-3

ONTARIO, Calif. - LW Mark Derlago, playing in his first game of the season, notched a hat trick and an assist to lead the Bakersfield Condors to a 6-3 victory against the Ontario Reign before 5,033 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena Wednesday night.

The Condors (2-2-1, 5 points) struck first, 16:20 into the opening period, when rookie F Matt Caruana went top shelf with a shot from the low slot. RW Chad Painchaud and Derlago registered the assists, and Bakersfield led 1-0 after one.

Ontario (3-2-0, 6 points) responded early in the second stanza with a goal from LW Todd Jackson at 2:46 to tie the game, 1-1. Bakersfield promptly broke the tie with a tally from Derlago, who chipped in a centering feed from C Dave Bonk at 9:09. Derlago and Caruana kept the pressure on, as they both scored their second goals of the game in the final minute of the second period. The Condors out-shot Ontario, 17-9, in the frame and took a 4-1 lead into the intermission.

After Jackson brought Ontario within two with a power-play goal early in the third, Derlago completed the hat trick on the power play with his third of the game at 7:58 to extend the Condors lead back to three goals, 5-2. Ontario added a power-play tally late, but RW Liam Huculak scored an empty-net goal, and the Condors won, 6-3. G Dave McKee stopped 26 of 29 shots to earn his second win of the season.

Notes from The Nest:

LW Mark Derlago's hat trick tonight is the fourth of his career... F Matt Caruana's two goals tonight added to his team-leading total of six on the year... RW Chad Painchaud notched three assists tonight and has five points (1g-4a) on the year... C Dave Bonk registered two assists in the game and is up to four this season... The Condors out-shot the Reign, 37-29.

The Condors return home for the Team Poster Giveaway this Saturday, Nov. 1 against the Stockton Thunder. All fans in attendance will receive a 2008-09 Condors Team Poster, courtesy of ABC23 and Pirate Radio 93.1. Doors open at 6 p.m., puck drops at 7 p.m.

Additionally, all Season Ticket Holders are invited to the lower level to meet the team immediately following the game.

Saturday night is also a Bright House Networks, Bakersfield Californian, and Wells Fargo Condors Kids Club Night, during which Kids Club members receive free admission through their membership.

Individual game tickets are on sale and may be purchased through the Rabobank Arena Box Office, which is open from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday with extended hours on game days.
