Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Salmon Kings and Utah Grizzlies kicked off a three game set at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday night. Victoria started Jonathan Boutin in net while Utah countered with Mike Mole.
The Salmon Kings struck first on the power play when Wes Goldie collected a rebound on the side of the net and made no mistake putting it into the open cage for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Goldie's 300th of his professional career. The power play would click again just minutes later when Dylan Yeo fired a puck from the slot for the 2-0 lead. That would be the score at the end of 20 minutes.
Utah jumped right back into the game in the second period when Tim Verbeek notched a power play marker. The Grizzlies would tie it up moments later when Vladimir Nikiforov tipped a pass up-and-in over Boutin. Victoria would retake the lead when newly acquired Curtis Billsten found the back of the net. Utah would score their third goal of the period when Verbeek tipped home a point shot for a power play marker. The game was tied 3-3 going into the third.
Utah pressed in the final period, but Boutin was solid in the Salmon Kings net. Victoria capitalized late while on a 5-on-3 power play when former Grizzly Olivier Labelle fired a puck past Mole. Salmon Kings 4 Grizzlies 3.
Victoria went 3-8=37.5% on the power play and Utah ended 2-7=28.6%. The Salmon Kings out shot the Grizzlies 36-33.
