
Checkers Re-Sign Defenseman Messier

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers Derek Wilkinson announced today that the team has re-signed defenseman Lyon Messier. Also, the New York Rangers of the National Hockey League have reassigned defenseman Tysen Dowzak to Kelowna of the Western Hockey League.
Messier, 6-foot-1, 175 pounds skated in the Checkers second game of the season against Florida but didn't register a point. Last season, he skated primarily for the Lincoln Stars of the United States Hockey League. He suited up for 45 games scoring five goals, 12 assists for 17 points with 45 penalty minutes. He also spent eight games with the Eerie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League and four games with the Kelowna Rockets (WHL) but didn't register a point during those stints.
Dowzak appeared in one game with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League this season where he debuted against the Springfield Falcons (AHL) in which he was scoreless with two penalty minutes. He also dressed in four games with the Checkers this season scoring no points and nine penalty minutes. Last year with the Kelowna, Dowzak registered 13 assists and 91 penalty minutes in 68 contests.
The Checkers are getting ready for their 16th season of play as a member of the ECHL. Opening night will take place on Halloween against the Augusta Lynx at a special 8 p.m. start. In the team's 15-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 11 times including four consecutive playoff appearances to date.
