
Washington Capitals Hire Murray

PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL announced that Assistant Director of
Communications/New Media Kelly Murray has been hired by the Washington
Capitals of the National Hockey League as communciations coordinator.
She will be the primary contact for non-traditional stories about the
organization and its personalities, including community events, while also
providing content for the team web site and serving as the primary contact
for the visiting team.
"The ECHL prides itself on being a stepping stone to higher levels,
including the National Hockey League. This is a tremendous opportunity for
Kelly and we wish her all the best," said ECHL Senior Vice President of
Communications/New Media Jack Carnefix. "Kelly helped the
communciations/new media department grow during her tenure. She will be
missed and we want to thank her for all of her hard work."
Murray joined the ECHL in December 2006 and was responsible for the layout
and design of ECHL printed publications, including the Official Guide and
Record Book, Schedule Book, ECHL This Week and the Kelly Cup Finals Media
Guide. She also created the graphic elements for the ECHL web site while
assisting in the creation of editorial content for press releases, ECHL
This Week and ECHL Today.
The Houston native worked as a member of the sports staff at The
Houston Chronicle with the agate department and participating in
planning meetings while also assisting with game-day coverage of the
Houston Astros, the Houston Texans and the Houston Rockets. She worked one
season as an intern for the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League
assisting in the production of the media guide as well as press releases,
feature stories and weekly updates and assisting the media on game day.
Murray worked as a student assistant in the University of Houston Sports
Information Department, serving as a media liaison for coaches and players
while also producing team media guides and press releases. She was awarded
her bachelor's degree in public relations with a minor in political science
from the University of Houston.

- The ECHL celebrated its 20th Anniversary in 2007-08 and is the
third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National
Hockey League and the American Hockey League.
- ECHL began in 1988-89 with five teams in four states and has grown to be

British Columbia in 2008-09.

- Former ECHL coaches working as head coaches in the NHL are
Bruce Boudreau of the Washington Capitals, Scott
Gordon of the New York Islanders and Peter Laviolette of the Carolina
Hurricanes. Boudreau, who coached Mississippi for three seasons winning the
Kelly Cup championship in 1999, was named
NHL Coach of the Year in 2007-08 becoming the first former ECHL coach
to receive the award. Laviolette, who began his coaching career with the
Wheeling Nailers, led Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup in 2006.
- There are 18 assistant coaches in the NHL who were players or coaches in
the ECHL.
- There are 18 former ECHL officials scheduled to work as part of the NHL
officiating team in 2008-09 with referees David

- ECHL has affiliations with 25 of the 29 teams in the American Hockey
League and for the past 19 years there has been an ECHL player on the
Calder Cup Champion.
- In the last six seasons the ECHL has had more call-ups to the AHL than
all other professional leagues combined with over 2,000 call-ups involving
more than 1,000 players since 2002-03.
